ABOUT OPEN DATA SA

Open Data SA is about providing free access to City data in a machine readable format, under an open license that allows the public to reuse and redistribute the data. The City of San Antonio launched this Open Data Portal in beta form in Summer 2018. The City has begun with the publication of some foundational datasets including 311 calls for service, permitting data, and an extensive catalog of GIS datasets.

Over time, this broader use of this portal will be driven by the core operating principle that the City’s data is open by default, and it is our mission to make more of the City’s data available here. With the help of Open Data, the City aims to be transparent and accountable, improve efficiency and effectiveness of its services, empower citizens and innovate in the way we do business.

Open Data Policy

The Open Data SA policy framework will serve to keep us moving toward our objectives. Our success is dependent on maintaining a clear set of policies, procedures, and a technical architecture robust enough to scale as we grow and flexible enough to adapt as our needs change. Toward that end have sought out open source best practices that support the values of Open Data SA and the Open Cities concepts embraced by SmartSA and leveraged work done by the City of San Jose, CA in the development of an Open Data Community Architecture Framework to form the basis for these policies.

Open Data SA Procedures

Purpose of this document:

To issue guidelines for internal departments to identify, review, prioritize and prepare publishable City of San Antonio open data for access by the public via the OpenGov Open Data SA Portal. The procedures listed in this document are applied in conjunction with the Open Data SA Policy of the City of San Antonio and its Administrative Directives 7.3A
